Idioms: Adverbial Forms
The idioms here mainly function as adverbs.
You should understand these expressions, know other ways of saying the same thing, and know which of these synonyms to use in a particular context. You can learn a lot about an idiom if you look at the context of its use. Try to guess the meaning of each idiom as it is used in the following sentences. 1. Even though I've tried many times to repair my car, time and again it won't start.
2. She never has time to take a vacation; she's busy with her work day in and day out.
3. My old friend used to visit me now and again on weekends, but lately her visits have been few and far between.
4. For now we'll go to work by bus, but soon we'll have to buy a car.
5. John finally was able to quit smoking for good; he swore that he would never touch another cigarette.
6. He wasn't able to quit smoking suddenly; he had to cut down little by little.
7. On the other hand, some people are able to quit all at once and are never tempted to smoke again.
8. Although people would like to live forever, everyone has to die sooner or later.
9. When I lost my keys, I had to look high and low before I finally found them.
10. By and large, Tom is an easy-going person.
