DNA helped a sheriff solve an old murder. Someone killed an eleven year old girl almost 30 years ago. They could not prove who killed her until now.
The sheriff was able to get new DNA evidence from under the victim’s fingernails and from her clothing. That DNA matched the DNA of a man who died in prison three years ago. The man was put in jail because he was found guilty of killing a college professor in 1982.
The new evidence also linked this man to six other murders. It surprised everyone that this man killed the little girl. They thought that she was killed by a different man.
The man they thought killed the girl is currently in jail. He murdered three other young women around the same time the little girl was killed. He will be in jail for the rest of his life.

The purpose of health insurance is to help you plan for unexpected, costly emergencies. If you get sick or injured, you need health insurance so the doctors can help you.
Medical insurance can be very expensive. The cost for this kind of insurance is going up. Like most people, you may not be able to afford all of the insurance you might need.
Many people think that if you could only afford one kind of insurance, you should buy health insurance. If you can afford only a small amount of health insurance, it is best to insure yourself against the big unexpected costs and pay the smaller common bills yourself.
There are different kinds of insurance you can get. Hospital Expense insurance will pay for any costs you get while having to be in a hospital. Surgical Expense insurance will pay for the doctor to operate on you. Regular Medical insurance will pay for any non-surgical treatment. Disability Income insurance will help pay for living expenses if you are sick and cannot work.

The Elk Grove High School has a problem. In that school district, too many students showed up for summer school classes. Teachers were scrambling to register the students for classes. There wasn’t room for all of the students. It was a very busy first day of summer school.
Many different subjects are taught during summer school. On the first morning, the school suddenly realized they had a problem. They didn’t have enough teachers for all of the classes. Students want to take many different subjects in summer school. These subjects include math, English, science and gym. The subjects that the school can offer depend on how many teachers they have. Teachers are not required to teach during the summer. Some teachers want to earn some extra money. They teach summer school.
School officials did not expect so many students to show up for summer school. About three thousand kids arrived on the first morning. Many more students were not enrolled. They showed up anyway. The extra students surprised the principal.
Many students spent four hours in the school gym. They were waiting to be assigned classes. This made many of the students unhappy. One student suggested that some students should go to a different school. He was concerned that he wouldn’t get his classes. A mother was angry that her son didn’t get the classes that he registered for. She said that he enrolled three months ago. Instead of history, her son was enrolled in gym. Her son was happy about it, however. He knew that he wouldn’t have any homework! His mother wants a better system for summer school. She said that the schools are new. They have new technology. They should have a more efficient plan.
Students take summer school classes for many reasons. Some are trying to improve a grade. Some are preparing to take a special exam. Students must pass this exam to graduate from high school. The exam is a new requirement for graduation in California. Many of the students needed these summer school classes in order to graduate. They were out of luck.
Next year, the district wants to improve their summer school system. They will consider offering summer school classes at each school site.

People in California voted to let marijuana be used for people who were in pain. The proposition said that people who are sick or dying can smoke marijuana. The marijuana helps get rid of the pain.
Some people really wanted the proposition to pass. They were happy when it did. One person said that it shows how much people care about others who are sick and dying.
Now people in California can smoke marijuana if they are sick. They need to have a doctor say that it is okay first. The federal law still says that it is illegal. The two courts not agreeing causes a problem. California is getting ready to work it out in the courts.
The new laws allow almost anyone who is suffering to smoke marijuana. No written note from the doctor is needed to smoke it. The new law also says that it is legal to grow marijuana for medical use.
Police are worried. They think that some people might smoke it even if they are not sick. Others are scared that the new laws will hurt the war on drugs. Police say they will continue to make people follow the drug laws, including the illegal use of marijuana.

Gas Prices Increase a Penny a Day ( TEMA 13 - 14 BOOK II )
(4/11/2006)
Read the story. Click the LISTEN" button at the bottom of the page to hear the story. When you are done, click the "NEXT" button.
Most people drive a car every day. They drive to work, school, or shopping. Most Americans are very dependent on their cars. People are concerned about increasing gasoline prices.
It seems as if gasoline prices are going up more than they are dropping. Every day, gas prices go up more. The cost of gasoline has steadily increased all year. One organization says that the price of unleaded gasoline has jumped 29 cents in the past month.
One man has been thinking about why the price has gone up. He knows that crude oil prices have gone up. Gasoline is made from crude oil. That means that the price of gasoline will go up also.
He says that another reason for the price increase is the active hurricane season. Bad weather had an impact on oil drilling. It was difficult and dangerous for companies to drill for oil in the ocean. That meant that less crude oil was available. Special factories use oil to make gasoline. A factory that makes products from oil is called a refinery. A shortage of oil means that less gasoline can be produced.
Many people like to take long car trips in the summer. The weather is nice so they go on vacation. More trips will create more demand for gasoline. This will make the price go escalate even further. In California, the price has gone up $0.33 in the last month.
High demand for gasoline has made the price go up. This makes it hard for people to afford to travel by car.

People of California are arguing whether or not it should be legal to use handheld cell phones while driving. Some people think it should be okay. Other people do not think it is safe.
One man is trying for a law that would only allow drivers to use hands-free cell phones while driving. He thinks that the bill could save lives. Similar bills have been introduced in the past. They have never passed.
Other people do not think the bill should pass. They say that studies have not proven that hands-free cell phones make driving safer. They think that drivers can become distracted by other things too. Having pets in the car, putting makeup on, or brushing your hair can be distractions also.
The proposed bill would fine people $20 the first time they are caught talking on their handheld cell phone while driving. They would be fined $50 every time they are caught after that.
